On Amtrak, the bellhops (people that help with your luggage) are called redcaps, and the consensus was that you tip these people similar to hotel or airport bellhops, on the order of $1 / bag. We handled our own luggage, did not use any redcaps, and did not tip anything.
On both trips I'll need to check my main bag - it's far bigger bags on amtrak than the 'hand luggage' size Amtrak gives on their website. It occurred to me that I have no idea how checking a bag onto a train works. I'm used to the UK's rail system, which has luggage areas for large bags in each carriage.
Sleeper Baggage: With an Amtrak sleeper ticket, you can bring three bags aboard to store on the lower level of the train or in your room. Limitations include: Excess bags cost $10.00 per item. Bags may not weigh more than 50 lbs. apiece. Bags may not exceed 36 x 36 x 36 inches in size.
