The belted kingfisher's big head, large bill, short tail, and stocky, top-heavy shape is distinctive. Adult males and females have slate-blue upperparts and breast band, and a white collar and underparts. The female has a rusty band on the belly (this is one of the unusual cases where the female bird is more colorful than the male).

It is a blue-gray with a white breast that is accentuated with rust flanks and a belly band.
